The IBO Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Students at this stage are in a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development. The IB builds its MYP programme around these considerations - but it is also concerned that students develop a personal value system by which to guide their own lives, as thoughtful members of local communities and the larger world.

Teaching and learning in the MYP involves understanding concepts in context. When teachers select a global context for learning, they are answering the questions:
• Why are we engaged in this inquiry?
• Why are these concepts important?
• Why is it important for me to understand?
• Why do people care about this topic?


Design Cycle

The Wilson Design Cycle

In particular, students are encouraged to display ingenuity and creativity in devising practical solutions to given tasks. Students use the design cycle to:

  • investigate
  • design
  • plan
  • create
  • evaluate.
This model is valuable for reinforcing and integrating skills learned in other disciplines, especially in the presentation and handling of data and the processes involved in the design and manufacture of a product. At the same time, it fosters awareness of the social and ethical implications of technological development.
